AI Glossary · plain English for UK business

What is prompt engineering?

Prompt engineering is the practice of structuring instructions, context and examples so an AI model produces reliable output. In business use its value is mostly in repeatability: turning a result that one person can get once into one the whole team can get every time.

Why it matters for a UK business

It is the skill that separates someone who gets a generic answer from someone who gets a usable one, and it is far more about clear thinking than about technical tricks. Most of what gets sold as prompt engineering is writing a good brief.

What it looks like in practice

Giving the model the context, the constraints, the examples and the format it needs to do the job well, the way you would brief a capable new colleague. The better the brief, the less rework.

What to do about it

Teach it on real work, not exercises. A team that has rewritten its own weekly report prompt three times has learned more than one that sat through a morning of theory.
