AI transformation is the redesign of how work is done around AI capability, as opposed to adding AI tools to existing processes. The distinguishing test is whether any process was reimagined: if the workflow is unchanged and merely faster in places, that is automation rather than transformation.
Why it matters for a UK business
The word gets used for everything from buying a licence to restructuring the company, which is why so many transformation programmes deliver a chatbot and call it done. The useful definition is narrower.
What it looks like in practice
Embedding AI into core workflows, building the governance and culture to use it responsibly, and developing people's capability to run their real work inside it. All three. Two out of three is a pilot.
What to do about it
Prove one use case in 90 days with an agreed measure of success, then scale what worked. A twelve-month trajectory is realistic; a twelve-week one is a demo.
