Decision guide · updated 26 October 2026
We are a Claude Partner, and we take no commission on licences of any kind. So here is the honest version: at the team tier the two cost about the same per seat, so the choice comes down to the work your people do all day. Plenty of businesses end up running both.
For most UK small businesses doing written and analytical work, Claude is the better daily tool. It reads long documents whole, holds your voice closely, and its Projects and skills turn a job you repeat every week into something you set up once. ChatGPT is stronger on images, has the larger range of third-party add-ons, and suits a team of many light users asking quick questions.

ChatGPT’s advantage is breadth. Image creation is built in, most of your staff have already tried it, and more third-party tools are built for it than for anything else. For a team where lots of people ask lots of small questions, that familiarity counts.
Claude’s advantage is depth. Long contracts, tenders and board packs. Writing that goes out under your name. Analysis that has to hold together across several steps. If a job would take a capable person an afternoon of real concentration, that is Claude’s territory.
And the platform is the small decision. It decides maybe a tenth of whether AI works for you. Whether anyone sets it up around how your business runs, and trains the people using it, decides the rest.
Most people stay on ChatGPT because of everything they have already built there: custom GPTs, saved instructions, habits. Moving to Claude usually means rebuilding all of that from a blank box. The Founders plugin skips the blank box. It arrives built around how a small business runs: your context, your voice, and your weekly jobs on a timetable. You run /start and it walks you through one question at a time, then you get 2 hours with a trained practitioner.
For a business of one or two people. £2,500 + VAT.
| The job | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Long documents: contracts, tenders, board packs | Claude | Reads the whole file and keeps track of the detail across it. |
| Writing in your own voice | Claude | Follows a written voice guide closely, so client-facing drafts sound less like a template. |
| Multi-step analysis | Claude | Works through a problem in order and shows its reasoning. |
| A job you repeat every week | Claude | Projects hold your business context, and skills turn the task into a set routine everyone runs the same way. |
| Images and visuals | ChatGPT | Image creation is built in. |
| Third-party apps and add-ons | ChatGPT | It has the largest range of tools built for it. Claude connects to the common business apps too, so check the ones you use. |
| Quick questions across a big team of light users | ChatGPT | Fast and familiar. Most of your staff have already tried it. |
| Rolling it out to a team | Either | Decided by training and clear rules, not by the tool. This is where adoption is won or lost. |
Deliberately no price table here. Plans and prices for both change often. When we last compared them, in June 2026, the everyday team plans sat within a few pounds a seat of each other, so check the current figures on each provider’s site, and model the usage as well as the seat.
Your chat history and your custom GPTs don’t move across as they are. What carries across is the thinking inside them: the instructions you wrote, the examples you gave, the tone you settled on. That is the part worth keeping, and it is exactly what a Claude Project or skill holds.
So the real work of switching is deciding which three or four jobs matter most, then setting those up properly once. That is the job the Founders plugin does with you.
Whichever you choose, write down what leaving would look like. Custom GPTs and Claude Projects both build switching cost, and that is far easier to decide on day one than in 18 months.
Just you, or you and one other? Don’t want to start over? The Founders plugin gives you best-practice foundations to build on, then you get two hours with a trained practitioner. £2,500 + VAT. See the Founders plugin
Running a team? Our SME set-up puts your whole organisation on one structured Claude set-up, then trains your team on best practice, in person or remote. Set-up £3,500 (introductory price until 1 January 2027), plus £2,500 per room of up to 10. See the SME set-up · Prices by team size
Weighing up Copilot too? If your business runs on Microsoft 365, read Claude vs Copilot next.
Take three pieces of work your team did last month, ones that cost real hours, and run each through both tools with the same brief. The differences are obvious on real material and almost invisible on a demo task.
Then check your data rules before anything else. If client or personal data can’t leave the UK, where it is processed depends on the plan and the contract, not on the app your team logs into. Sort that before you roll anything out.
And whichever you pick, the tool is not what decides whether this works. Programmes stall on people and process, and that is the part training fixes.
For written and analytical work, yes: long documents, writing in your own voice, multi-step analysis and jobs you repeat every week. ChatGPT is better for images, has the bigger range of third-party add-ons, and suits a team of many light users asking quick questions. Plenty of businesses run both.
At the everyday team tier the seat prices sit close together, so the seat fee rarely decides it. The real cost is usage, and the time it takes to make the tool stick. Run a month’s pilot with five to ten people, log what they actually use, and model two years from that. Plans change often, so check current prices on each provider’s site before you buy.
They don’t move across as they are, but the instructions, examples and tone inside them do. Those become Claude Projects and skills. The Founders plugin walks a business of one or two people through setting up its most important jobs that way, one question at a time.
Yes, and plenty of businesses do: Claude for the heavy written and analytical work, ChatGPT for images and quick questions. Give each one a clear job, and write down which data can go into which, so nobody has to guess.
Because we take no commission on licences of any kind, so the recommendation carries no vendor incentive. If ChatGPT is the right answer for your business, we will say so.
Neither, by default. It depends on the plan, the contract and where the data is processed, and all three change. Check them before client or personal data goes in, and give your team a one-page usage policy. Our guide to AI data storage and UK GDPR covers what to check.
